The brand Canon is well known for producing fast, reliable, and easy-to-use scanners all over the world. However, sometimes users may confront problems with it’s working ability.

A Canon scanner might not work due to an incompatibility with the operating system or any recent Windows update. Although it is pretty common and has affected a majority of users lately, this scenario needs an immediate fix.

What to Do if Canon Scanner is not Working on Windows 10?

Before moving further with any other fixes, we recommend you to restart your system and turn off the scanner for some time. If the issue persists even after doing so, then we recommend you to try some of the fixes listed below.

Fix 1: Uninstall Both Canon Scanner Driver and Canon MF Toolbox

As mentioned earlier, the Canon scanner might not work after a system upgrade. The previous driver becomes incompatible and thus it is important to uninstall both the scanner driver and MF toolbox. 

Thus, to uninstall the Canon Scanner driver, follow the steps given below.

  • At first, go to Start and then open the Control Panel.
  • Click on Device Manager and open the imaging devices. Locate the Canon scanner and then right-click on the Canon scanner driver.
  • Now, click on the “Uninstall device” to confirm the uninstallation.

To remove the Canon MF Toolbox, follow the steps that are given below.

  • Go to Control Panel and then Programs and Features.
  • Choose Canon Toolbox and then right-click on it.
  • Click on the Uninstall button. 

Fix 2: Check the Hardware and Connection of Canon Scanner

The basic thing one should do on facing Canon scanner not working issue is check for its connection and hardware. Thus, try some of the techniques mentioned below and see if you can regain its working ability.

  • Unplug the Canon scanner cable.
  • Wipe the Canon scanner glass with a clean cloth and plug the scanner again.
  • Check whether the scanner and computer are on or not.
  • Connect the Canon scanner to Windows 10

Fix 3: Change the Permission of MF Tool 

If the problem is correlated with only scanning but it can print efficiently without any issue, then follow the steps given below sequentially.

  • At first, right-click on the MF toolbox and then select Properties.
  • Go to the Compatibility tab and then click on Change settings for all users.
  • Once the pop-up window appears, select Run this program as administrator.
  • Right-click on the pictures or document folder and then select Properties.
  • Go to the Security tab and then click on your username. Again, click on Edit.
  • Click on Allow. 

Fix 4: Enable Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Services

Many users claim that enabling WIA services helped them to resolve this issue easily. Thus, to do so, go through the steps mentioned here.

  • Search for Services within the search box and then open it.
  • Look for Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) and right-click on it. Click on Properties.
  • Within the General tab, make the Startup type as Automatic and then start the service.
  • Now, Click on Apply>Ok.
  • Go to the Log On Tab and then click on the Local System account. Mark the “Allow service to interact with desktop” option.
  • Again, go to the Recovery tab and then to the First failure section. Select “Restart the Service” option from the list.
  • Now, restart your system and check whether the problem got resolved or not. 

Fix 5: Perform Boot Clean Up

If the problem persists even after following the above fixes, then maybe it is time to clean boot your system. Thus, follow the steps below to clean boot your Windows system.

  • Go to Start and right-click on it.
  • Now, click on Search and type “msconfig” within it. Press the Enter button.
  • Click on Services and mark the “Hide all Microsoft Services” option. 
  • Now, click on Disable all>Startup>Open Task Manager.
  • Select the startup program which you think is causing trouble and then click on Disable. Perform this step for all startup programs. 
  • Close the Task Manager and then click on Ok within the System Configuration window.
  • Restart your system after doing so.

Fix 6: Run the Troubleshooter

Windows inbuilt troubleshooter can help you resolve any technical glitches within your system. Thus, it is recommended to try running the troubleshooter and check if the issue resolved.

  • At first, press both Windows and I keys together to open the Settings app.
  • Go to Update and Security and select the Troubleshoot option located on the left side.
  • Now, go to the Printer and click on Run the troubleshooter option.
  • Once the Troubleshooter window opens, follow the instructions appearing on your screen. Check if the problem resolved or not.

Fix 7: Run System File Checker (SFC scan)

Corrupted files within a system can affect the working of a Canon scanner. Hence, it is important to resolve it by running an SFC scan. Here are the steps by which you can do so easily.

  • Go to Start and type Command Prompt within the search box.
  • Right-click on Command Prompt and then run it as administrator.
  • Type “sfc/scannow” within it.
  • This will start the System File checker and it will start detecting corrupted files within your system.

Fix 8: Update the Drivers

An outdated driver can be another reason why your Canon scanner might not work. Thus, for such cases,  it is recommended to go to the official website of Canon and download the latest drivers if available. 

The issue should get resolved after updating the drivers and your Canon scanner should work absolutely fine.
